Why the "z" in horzing?

How often to you get to use the sound that the letter "z" makes?  If you're a human, the answer is likely somewhere between sometimes and not often.  If your a squirrel, the answer, as far as I'm aware, is never.

Bottom line: The letter "z" is fantastic and doesn't get enough love.  It's underutilized.

Say the word "horsing."

All fine and good, right?

But now, say the word/fake word "horzing."

You liked it, admit it.  It had a bit of an edge to it with the "z", didn't it?  Yummy.

Now, I'm not advocating the replacement of every "s" sound in the English language with a "z" sound.  But, I am saying don't be scared to try it.  If it floats your boat, giddy on up.

Now let's move on to defining the word "horzing."

As it's not a word, it doesn't have a definition.  Satisfied?

Really though, it's not a word.  However, that's the beauty of it.  It's definition is fluid, ongoing, and ever changing.

Horzing is a phrase that was born in the last 5 or 6 years and is directly related to horse racing.

A good friend of mine introduced me to the sport about 10 years ago and our interest has grown ever since.

As our interest grew and time passed, our ability to discuss horse racing while adhering to the rules of  traditional English deteriorated.  Example:

A normal interaction 10 years ago:

Friend: Do you want to go to the OTB and bet on some horses?
Me:     Yeah, what time do you want to meet?

A normal  interaction, present day:

Friend: Horzing? Mud Bug?
Me:     Meow.

With that brief bit of background, I would currently describe horzing as any of the following:

- Handicapping
- Watching a horse race
- Betting on a horse race
- Going to a track or OTB
- A celebratory term following a successful bet

And there you have it, happy horzing everyone.
